5 Signs That Should Indicate Your Website Needs Work

November 11, 2021

What are 5 signs that should indicate your website needs work? A lot of owners don't know when to pull the trigger on a redesign, but there are 5 signs that will let you know if it's time. Do any of these 5 sounds like something your business might be experiencing? If so, then it may be time for a website redesign.

You're not getting enough traffic

If you've done everything you can think of to bring more visitors to your website, but the numbers just aren't there then it's time for a change. There are many reasons why your website is not getting enough traffic. Some of the main ones are:

  • You've used too many keywords
  • You have a weak or no social media presense
  • Your website doesn't have a blog
  • Your website is un-professional
  • Your website isn't responsive.

In a recent blog post titled "Why No-One's Coming to Your Website" we discuss these further. You can view that blog post here.

The design doesn't match the industry

If your website doesn't match the industry you're in, this can be a big problem. If potential clients aren't getting that "wow factor" they are probably going to leave before even making it to the contact page. Often times designers will try to think way outside of the box which is good however, humans are very physiologically led and if they go to a website and do not feel "comfortable" or the website does not feel like something they are somewhat used to , they will leave. Your website should match your industry.

For example, if you're a law firm and the design of your website is too modern or too "trendy" this can be harmful because most people do not have an association with these types of websites as being something that has to do with legal services so it could lead them elsewhere.

Users can't find what they need

If your website visitors are not able to find what they need quickly and easily, this can be a big problem. If you're losing 5 out of every 100 visitors because they cannot find the contact page or get lost in the navigation then it's time for an update. Users that cant find what they need will not only leave your site, they will go to your competitors effectively giving your competitors more business. Word of mouth is immensely important and if people are unable to find what they need on your site they will do one of two things: either not talk about your site at all or, talk badly about your site.

It takes too long to load pages

If your website takes 5-15 seconds to load a single page, it's time for an update. The average person has the attention span of about 5 seconds nowadays before they move on to something else so if your site is taking 5-15 seconds per page you are losing visitors left and right. When looking at a recent study  it was found that 40% of users will leave a site if it takes 5 seconds to load. This number jumps up to 67% when you're talking about more complex sites with lots of images and videos on them. Make sure your website is running as fast as possible.

An easy way to figure out what is slowing your website down is going to an online website speed test. You can type in your website and see how it is running. Click here to head over to our favorite speed test.

There is no mobile version

Last but most certainly not least , if your website doesn't have a mobile version, you are losing business. In 2021 it was estimated that  more than 50% of all web traffic will be coming from mobile devices. If your site doesn't have a responsive version or an app, you are losing business to people that do. If you're not catering to this audience then they most certainly will go somewhere else and taking their money with them. A recent study found that about half of all small businesses don't even have  a mobile version and about 5 percent say they aren't even thinking of creating one. This is a big mistake and if you fall into this category, now is the best time to get started.

Conclusion

If your website is not getting enough traffic, the design doesn't match the industry, users can't find what they need, It takes too long to load pages and/or there is no mobile version of your site, then chances are time for an update.
